Western Florida Second Jurisdiction’s Youth Department partnered with Church of God in Christ’s (COGIC) International Missions Department on August 27, 2018 in a project called The Awakening Project. The project provided hygiene kits for the homeless and street clean-up in neglected areas. Under the direction of the organization’s Prelate, Bishop Larry E. Perkins, several churches participated and organized from three designated locations throughout Florida: Life Changers COGIC in Tallahassee, Malone Memorial COGIC in Orlando and Faith Temple COGIC in Fort Lauderdale.

Dr. DeMetra Gaston Williams says “we are getting started for the awakening Orlando project. A big [thanks] to our Florida coordinator Elder Phillip Williams. We are getting our stuff setup so that we can start our hygiene kits. We have shampoo and conditioner, toothbrush and toothpaste, lotions, snacks, soap, deodorant, socks and we also have water to give out. Our plan is to make over 300 bags.”

“We kicked off the 2018 Awakening Project in Orlando today with Western Florida 2nd… directed by their Youth President Dr. DeMetra Williams. Awesome job passing out hygiene bags to those who are less fortunate. We witnessed and prayed those who desired prayer. I met an amazing man named Calvin. He shared his story with me… you never know what people are going through until you take the time to talk to them,” wrote Pastor Phillip Williams, Florida Director, International Missions Department COGIC in a comment via social media.
